Second-Ranked Volleyball Serves Up Victory in the Home Opener

The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team used teamwork, resilience and record-setting serving to down Wheaton College (Ill.) in the home opener.

The Flying Dutch collected a 25-23, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 win at DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 1,332. Hope improved to 9-0 overall.

With seven service aces, junior Sammie Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central HS) surpassed the school record for aces in a four-set match played to 25 points.

Hope and Wheaton each took a set to open the match.

After Wheaton jumped ahead 11-3 in the third set, kills from juniors Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian), Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) along with an ace from Seib brought Hope within six.

A second six-point run from Hope to give the Orange and Blue their first lead of the set at 20-19 was highlighted by two aces from Seib. Seib surpassed Jenna Vanderlann's 2019 record of six service aces in a four-set match.

Wheaton grabbed the lead back with two consecutive points, but the Flying Dutch responded with the next five points to clinch the third set.

In the fourth set, Hope scored seven of the final nine points to close out Wheaton (5-5).

Seib also finished with 13 digs, second to 18 from teammate Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central).

Hope finished the fourth set with a 70% attack rate to Wheaton's 56%.
