Women's Soccer Blanks Adrian in MIAA Opener

Two early goals in a span of nearly three minutes propelled the Hope College women's soccer team to a successful MIAA opener.

The Flying Dutch struck twice within the first 16 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory against Adrian College on a rainy Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston HS) and senior Madison Holloway (Macatwa, Michigan / Holland Christian) both scored in the first half to give Hope a commanding 2-0 lead.

Head coach Leigh Sears said her team elevated its play after a slow start.

"We decided to work really hard collectively, not individually," Sears said of the decisive 2 minute, 37-second swing. "Our identity is that we can outwork teams. But we have to do it all the time. We have another gear. When we use it, we're pretty good."

Bellinger put the Flying Dutch (3-1-4 overall) on the board in the 14th minute by deflecting an Adrian clearing attempt off of her knee for her third goal of the season.

Shortly after the restart, Hope created another successful run.

Sophomore Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) set up a charging Holloway up the left side near the goal area.

With her left foot, Holloway booted the ball into the net in the 17th minute for third goal of the season and her third consecutive game with a goal.

Hope added another goal 1 ½ minutes into the second half.

After a free kick bounced around at Bri Rose's feet, the freshman from Hudsonville, Michigan (Unity Christian) ripped a shot under the crossbar for her first collegiate goal.

Hope went on to outshoot Adrian (4-3-4, 0-1 MIAA) by a 25-8 margin.

"We have the numbers; sometimes we can wear teams down. It's not always going to happen," Sears said. "Adrian did its best, but they got tired. That allowed us to find each other a little easier."

Freshman goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) recorded three saves during her second shutout of the season.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Sept. 30, at noon against Trine University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope and Trine tied for second place in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
