Carley Wagasky Propels Women's Soccer Past Trine in Showdown

Junior Carley Wagasky and the Hope College women's soccer team showed out before a crowd of 512 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Saturday.

Led by Wagasky's two second-half goals, the Flying Dutch defeated Trine University, 3-1, to remain atop the MIAA standings.

Hope improved to 4-1-4 on the season and 2-0 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch, who shared second place in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, are tied for first place with Calvin University.

Hope will host third-place Kalamazoo College (4-3-2, 1-0-1 MIAA) on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) delivered a game-changing attack early during the second half.

Shortly after Bella Mabry pulled Trine even in the 51st minute, Wagasky intercepted a pass in the attacking third as she slipped through the back line.

Wagasky then bested Trine keeper Sophie Aschemeirer in a one-on-one situation to put Hope ahead in the 53rd minute.

Eight minutes later, Wagasky struck again for her first multi-goal game with the Flying Dutch off an assist from senior captain Elisa Melville (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi).

Freshman goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) kept the Thunder from erupting again by making six of her eight saves after Hope regained the lead.

The Flying Dutch outshot Trine by a 23-8 margin.

In the first half, Hope scored in the eighth minute after senior Jenna Mustapha (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) dropped a corner kick into the box that sophomore Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) drove home from inside the penalty box with a right-footed strike.

Trine fell to 5-3-4 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.
