Second-Ranked Volleyball Rebounds to Top Chicago after Losing to No. 3 Wisconsin-Oshkosh

It took a little extra work, but the Hope College volleyball team bounced back from its first loss of the season.

The second-ranked Flying Dutch outlasted host University of Chicago in five sets on Saturday, winning 23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 15-10 after scoring four of the match's final five points.

Earlier in the afternoon, Hope dropped a showdown against third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in four sets, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22.

The Flying Dutch are now 14-1 on the season.

Hope's next match is Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. against No. 7 Calvin University at DeVos Fieldhouse. The match — the first of two between the teams during the regular season — will be the one that counts toward the league standings.

Against Chicago, the Flying Dutch overcame hitting .191 as a team behind a match-high 21 kills from junior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and a match-high 48 assists from sophomore setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline).

Junior Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) chipped in 13 kills and a team-best .387 attack percentage.

Sophomore Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) recorded 11 kills.

Hope received 27 digs apiece from senior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) and junior Sammie Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central).

Diya Mishra led Chicago (5-11) with 17 kills. The Maroons hit .084 as a team.

Against Oshkosh, Hope started fast with a .462 attack percentage but could not replicate its success and finished hitting .247 as a team.

Three recorded double-digit kills for the Flying Dutch: VanderWeide with 18, Fox with 13 and junior Liz VanderSlice (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) with 10.

Lee finished with 42 assists.

Oshkosh (20-0) served six aces to Hope's two.

The Titans hit .326 and .382 during the second and third sets to take control of the match. Sami Perlberg's 18 kills led Oshkosh.
