Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Alan Babbitt

Second-Ranked Volleyball Sweeps Kalamazoo

The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team flexed its depth and versatility while spiking Kalamazoo College in three sets on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch remained undefeated on the season with a 25-17, 25-9, 25-20 victory that raised their record to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play.

Hope used 16 different players and a variety of combinations on the court throughout the match.

"I really liked that we ran a few different lineups and tried a few different things. We stayed relatively steady in how we were continuing to play this game given some of those lineup changes that we were making. That was encouraging," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "I did feel we were a little sloppy with our ball control and missed some opportunities where we could have kept momentum on our side. We're definitely going to have to fine-tune some of that stuff."

The Flying Dutch hit .309 as a team.

Junior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a match-high 14 kills and finished with a .357 attacking percentage.

Sophomore Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) chipped in nine kills and three service aces.

Sophomore Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) had six kills with a team-best .462 attack percentage.

Sophomore Lauren Lee (Saline, Michigan / Skyline) totaled 25 assists and a match-best five services aces while playing just two sets.

Hope's 12 service aces were its second-highest total in a match this season. In the season opener against St. Olaf College (Minn.), the Flying Dutch recorded 13.

Hope seized control of the match during the second set by ripping off a 17-1 run to grab a 21-3 lead.

Kalamazoo (6-8, 1-1 MIAA) hit .128 as a team. Halley Johnson's six kills led the Hornets.

Hope returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 30, with two non-league matches at the University of Chicago.

At 1:30 p.m, Central, the Flying Dutch face third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. At 4 p.m. Central, Hope plays UChicago.
