Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Women's Soccer Overcomes Early Deficit, Ties Centre

Another early deficit against a well-regarded opponent did not faze the Hope College women's soccer team.

The Flying Dutch delivered a game-tying, second-half goal to earn a 1-1 draw against Centre College (Ky.) in the home opener on Friday in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 660.

Hope's record is now 1-0-2 on the season after rallying from a 1-0 deficit for the third time this season.

Head coach Leigh Sears said she was not worried when Centre — an NCAA Division III Championships qualifier last season — jumped ahead on Bella Nelson's goal in the 23rd minute.

"Our sophomores have matured. We just have some real competitors," Sears said. "We have some freshmen who come from winning programs and are used to winning. Other teams might have crumbled when we got down. Right now when we get down, I'm just thinking, 'When's it going to come?'

"They're not going to quit until the end. This is a great team. They're a national tournament team every year. We outshot them. This is a good result."

The Flying Dutch, who finished with 19 shots to Centre's 14, finally broke through in the 76th minute.

After a Centre foul, senior defender Jenna Mustapha (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) took the kick on the restart straight on from about 40 yards out.

Freshman midfielder/forward Jenna Schreiber (Jenison, Michigan / Hudsonville Unity Christian) soared into the air at the top of the penalty area and used a header to deflect the ball past Centre keeper Grace Dutcher.

It was Schreiber's first career goal for Hope.

"We've been playing her in the middle. I think she's really a forward; she can play either," Sears said of Schreiber. "(Assistant coach Holly VanNoord) said, 'Get to the goalkeeper!' and that's exactly what she did. She's a goal scorer. She scored a lot in high school. She got it done."

Dutcher ended up with seven saves for Centre (2-1-1).

Freshman keeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made four saves for Hope.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. against Illinois Wesleyan University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
