Sara Schermerhorn Adds Indoor 400-Meter Track Record to Resume

Pictured, sophomore Sara Schermerhorn
Sara Schermerhorn ran away with another school record for the Hope College women's indoor track and field team.

The sophomore from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS) cut more than two seconds off the old mark for the 400 meters on Friday by clocking a first-place time of 56.24 seconds at the Grand Valley State University Bill Clinger Classic.

Schermerhorn's time converts to 56.99 seconds for the record book and NCAA Division III Championships consideration because of GVSU's oversized track.

Schermerhorn eclipsed the old mark of 59.43 set by Grace Behrens in 2022 with the nation's second-fastest time this season.

Junior thrower Greta Robrahn joined Schermerhorn in the winner's circle.

The Zeeland, Michigan, native (Zeeland East) heaved a first-place toss of 12.82 meters (42-0 ¾).

Three more throwers joined Robrahn in the Top 10.
  • 5. Sophomore Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe), 12.21m (40-0-¾);
  • 9. Senior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township), 11.28m (37-0 ¼);
  • 10. Junior Alana Policastro (Geneva, Illinois / Geneva Community), 11.07m (36-4).
In the 4x400 relay, Schermerhorn teamed with sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) and freshman Stella Farmer (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) for a third-place tie of 4:02.71.

In the 3,000-meter invite race, senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) placed sixth with a time of 9:53.86.

In the 3,000 open race, junior Audrey White (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) clocked an eighth-place finish of 10:48.18.

In the high jump, sophomore Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) cleared 1.54 meters (5-0 ½) for ninth place.

In the triple jump, junior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) took eighth by leaping 9.37 meters (30-9).

In the weight throw, sophomore Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) recorded a 10th-place heave of 12.82 meters (42-0 ¾).

Hope's next meet is Friday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Aquinas College.
