The Hope College men's ice hockey team opened Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division play with 3-0 and 6-2 victories against Western Michigan University's American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 team this weekend.
The Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 5-1 overall.
On Friday, senior goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler HS) stopped all 30 shots he faced during a 3-0 victory at Wings Ice Arena in Kalamazoo.
Hope erupted for three second-period goals: sophomore right wing Brady Breit (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) at the 10-minute, 32-second mark;Â junior forward Brenden Tarpening (Fenton, Michigan / Flint Powers) on a shorthanded goal at 16:13;Â and junior forward Keegan McNamara (Linden, Michigan / Fenton) at 18:50.
On Saturday, Hope skated to a 6-2 victory at home at Griff's IceHouse West by snapping a 1-1 tie with four second-period goals, including on special teams.
Freshman right wing Dylan Smith (Valencia, California / Learning Post) delivered the first of his two goals during the period by striking on the power-play for a 2-1 lead 6:22 into the second period.
Senior defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) followed 50 seconds later with a short-handed goal.
Junior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) gave the Flying Dutchmen a 4-1 lead by scoring on the power play at the 10:48 mark.
Smith added an even-strength goal with three seconds remaining in the period.
Sophomore center Max Hoffman (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) chipped in his first goal of the season during the third period.
Schick recorded 25 saves during 50 minutes on the ice.
Hope returns to action this weekend, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 18-19, by hosting a two-game series against Arizona State University at Griff's IceHouse West. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
