No. 2 Volleyball Serves Up Senior Day Victory vs. Albion

Hope also grabs sole possession of the MIAA lead.

On a special day at DeVos Fieldhouse, the second-ranked Hope College volleyball team honored six seniors, then served a 25-7, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Albion College during a first-place showdown in the MIAA.

The Flying Dutch (19-2 overall) moved into sole possession of first place in the league standings with a 5-0 league record.

Before the match, the Flying Dutch honored seniors Grace Marshall (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt HS), Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), Eva Hartung (Lisle, Illinois / Naperville North), Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian), Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central), and Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

Head Coach Becky Schmidt expressed pride in the seniors for enriching a well-established winning culture both on the court and in the classroom. Saturday was the 100th win for the senior class.

"You just look at that group and you see quality people from head to toe," Schmidt said. "I am super proud of this group and everything they've been through to keep our program where it's been over the last few years."

Schmidt noted that the seniors have already worked through a regional final appearance their freshman season, a run to the national quarterfinals their sophomore year, and last year's magical run to the national championship match.

With high MIAA stakes on the line, Hope brought its aces to the table. Seven different players served at least one ace for a total of 11 on the day – the third most all season.

The victory gave the Orange and Blue control over its destiny in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch hold a one-game lead over second-place Calvin University and Trine University with four league matches remaining.

Against Albion, Hope began the match with an all-senior lineup and kicked off play with an Annie Lockett kill that sparked a dominating first set.

The Flying Dutch began the match on a 10-3 run, forcing an Albion timeout. The Orange and Blue did not turn back, giving up only four more points en route to taking a 25-7 first set.

The second set began identically to the first, with another 10-3 opening run to force an Albion timeout. By the time the dust settled, Hope had raced to a two-set lead with a 25-13 second set victory.

The Flying Dutch settled into cruise control and rolled through the third set, taking it 25-16 and securing the match victory.

Hope finished a surgical victory without allowing a single block and matched its season-low of five attacking errors. The Flying Dutch hit .340 in the match.

VanderWeide finished the match with yet another clinical performance, leading all players with 13 kills while also delivering eight digs, two service aces, and an assist to boot.

Seib led all players with 13 digs.

Junior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) tossed up 26 assists.

The Flying Dutch look forward to a home MIAA contest against The University of Olivet on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.
