Football and Volleyball Standouts Named MIAA Athletes of the Week

Two from Hope College have been selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week: Grant Holtzer in football and Alison DeWeerd in women's volleyball.

Both are receiving the accolades for the second time in their careers.

Holtzer (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos HS) is the MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week.

A fifth-year senior wide receiver, Holtzer powered the 18th-ranked and MIAA-leading Flying Dutchmen to a 49-18 victory at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.

The business major caught four passes for a career-high 180 yards and three touchdowns. Holtzer scored on the first and last plays from scrimmage in the first half: 65 yards for a 7-0 lead and 80 yards for a 42-11 halftime lead.

Early in the second quarter, Holtzer reeled in a 24-yard TD reception. Holtzer became the first from Hope with three touchdown receptions in nine years.

DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) is the MIAA Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

The senior middle hitter led the Flying Dutch last week to a 3-0 victory at Kalamazoo, a 3-0 win against Albion, and a 3-2 edge over nationally ranked Chicago.

Over the week, DeWeerd totaled 29 kills, two service aces and 32 points. The social work major had a .778 hitting percentage against Kalamazoo, a .429 hitting percentage vs. the Brits and a .394 hitting percentage against 19th-ranked Chicago.
