No. 2 Volleyball Extends Win Streak vs. Calvin to Six Matches

Hope wins in three sets on opening night for One Big Weekend on campus

Confidently and determinedly, the second-ranked Hope College volleyball team continued its second-longest rally in the rivalry with Calvin University.

In front of the season's largest NCAA Division III volleyball crowd, the Flying Dutch rallied from behind in sets twice en route to a 3-0 victory on Friday during the opening night of One Big Weekend on campus.

Hope (21-2) served a 25-21, 26-24, 25-12 victory in front of 2,357 fans at DeVos Fieldhouse, including members of the 2014 national championship team that were honored during the match on the 10th anniversary of the team's first NCAA Division III national title.

The victory extended the Flying Dutch's winning streak in the series to six matches, their second-longest run ever.

Multiple early deficits in sets one and two proved not too much for Hope.

"I think we were playing hard. We weren't playing well and they were taking advantage of it," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "Calvin was doing a really nice job defensively. Their block was doing a nice job of making us uncomfortable. The first parts of those sets, we played into their defense rather than creating opportunities to get them extended.

"I thought in the final points of each one of those sets we found ways to keep our composure and to make things a little more difficult for Calvin. That's what we're capable of being able to do from the start. Sometimes we like having our back against the wall. I'm proud of our team's composure and resilience in those key moments."

The game, which did not count toward the MIAA standings, marked the Flying Dutch's second of the season vs. Calvin (15-8). Hope won in three sets on Oct. 1 at Calvin.

The Flying Dutch's current win streak began during the 2022 NCAA Division III regional final at Calvin on Nov. 12, 2022.

Earlier in the rivalry, Hope defeated Calvin eight times in a row between Nov. 4, 1978, and Oct. 27, 1981. Calvin leads the all-time series, 93-48.

On Friday, senior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a match-high 12 kills.

Seniors Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) and Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) chipped in 10 apiece.

Setter and junior Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) totaled 42 assists.

In the first set, Hope trailed by four points at 16-12 following an Aerin Baker kill for the Knights.

The Flying Dutch traded rallies with Calvin before ripping off six consecutive points for a 23-19 set lead. Back-to-back kills from Lockett and a service ace from senior Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central) capped the decisive run.

In the second set, Calvin jumped to a 6-1 lead and pulled ahead 15-9 after Vanessa Martinez's kill. The Knights led 23-19 before the Flying Dutch erupted for seven of the final eight points.

Hope fought off one match point after a Mackenzie Gerig service error. After the Knights committed two attack errors, the Flying Dutch closed the set with a VanderWeide kill.

In the third set, Hope served up runs of four, five and six points to break open the set. Hope hit .394 during the third set and .236 for the match.

The Knights recorded just three kills during the final set. Baker and Avery Ekkens topped Calvin.

Hope's next match is Friday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Alma College. The Flying Dutch can clinch at least a share of an MIAA title and the top seed for the league tournament with a victory.
