ACHA Men's Hockey Beats Michigan State Twice, Allows Only One Goal

The Hope College men's ice hockey team swept the Spartans of Michigan State University over the weekend, winning 4-1 Friday on home ice and 3-0 Saturday on the road.

The Flying Dutchmen skated to their ninth consecutive victory and improved to 9-1 overall (4-0 in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division).

On Saturday, senior goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler HS) shut out MSU by making 31 saves.

Hope jumped to a 2-0 first-period lead behind goals from junior forward Gunnar Suidinski (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) 6 minutes, 9 seconds into the game and sophomore right wing Brady Breit (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) with 2:45 left in the period.

It was Breit's fourth goal of the season and Suidinski's first.

Senior defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) chipped in his eighth goal of the season late in the second period. Holtrop also assisted on Breit's goal.

On Friday, Hope snapped a 1-1 tie with three third-period goals.

Junior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) snapped home the game-winner 5:06 into the third period. It was Onstott's ninth of the season.

Holtrop then struck twice in a span of 1:18 late in the period. The final goal was shorthanded and an empty-netter.

Junior defenseman Austin Ieuter (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) gave the Flying Dutchmen a 1-0 lead at 13:33 of the first period. MSU pulled even with four seconds remaining in the period.

Schick stopped 17 shots against the Spartans (2-3-1).

Hope's next ACHA series is Friday-Saturday, Nov. 1-2, vs. Oakland University. The Flying Dutchmen face Oakland at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Wild Wings Ice Arena in Rochester and host the second game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Griff's IceHouse West.
