Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Alan Babbitt

No. 2-Ranked Volleyball Turns Back Challenge from Adrian

Sophomore Kathryn Oates delivered the timely serving that the second-ranked Hope College volleyball team needed in a critical moment against Adrian College.

Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian HS) capped a four-point swing during the first set with back-to-back aces that propelled the Flying Dutch to their first lead of the night.

MIAA-leading Hope went on to hand the Bulldogs their first league loss with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-12 victory at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch overcame an opponent with plenty of bite to raise their record to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play. Hope remained a half-game ahead of Albion College in the league standings after extending its winning streak to six games.

Adrian (5-9, 2-1 MIAA) jumped to a 5-1 lead during the first set. The Flying Dutch did not pull ahead until Oates capped a four-point run for a 17-15 lead with two aces.

Head coach Becky Schmidt said four strong serves from Oates set Hope up for success.

"I thought Adrian did the simple things really well and we weren't able to find a rhythm that let us do the complicated things that we're usually pretty good at. We were pretty predictable and Adrian made us pay for it. They put pressure on us," Schmidt said. "I thought when Kate went on a serving run she turned the momentum tide for us. [The aces] gave us a little of our rhythm back."

The Flying Dutch hit .206 for the match after finishing at .111 during the first set.

Sophomore Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) recorded a game-high 10 kills and a team-high four blocks.

Senior Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) chipped in nine kills. The reigning MIAA Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week hit .643 against Adrian.

Senior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) totaled seven kills and 18 digs.

Hope received six kills apiece from juniors Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) and Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township).

Junior Lauren Lee (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline) contributed 40 assists and 13 digs.

Senior Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central) finished with a match-high 27 digs.

Hope will host a tournament on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 11-12, at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch will play on Saturday against Swarthmore College at 11 a.m. and Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m.
