ACHA Men's Hockey Knocks Off 10th-Ranked Purdue Northwest in OT ... Twice

The Hope College men's ice hockey team stepped up to the American Hockey Collegiate Hockey Association's top level and skated away with a pair of thrilling victories.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated nationally-ranked Purdue University Northwest, 4-3, in overtime both on Thursday on the road and Friday at home.

Purdue Northwest was ranked 10th in ACHA Division 1.

Hope, which is competing at the ACHA Division 3 for the final time, improved to 12-2 on the season.

On Thursday, junior Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) scored the game-winner 1 minute, 28 seconds into overtime at the Kube Sports Complex.

It was Onstott's second goal of the game. Onstott also scored during the Flying Dutchmen's three-goal second period.

Purdue Northwest tied the score with two third-period goals, including an equalizer from Hayden Masloski with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.

Senior goalkeeper Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) made 33 saves for Hope.

On Friday, It was the Flying Dutchmen forcing overtime by scoring during the final minute of regulation.

Sophomore Brady Breit (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) tied the score at 3-3 with 43 seconds remaining in the third period. 

The goal came 53 seconds after Purdue Northwest snapped a 2-2 tie on a Mike Clough goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / St. Ignatius College Prep) recorded 40 saves for the Flying Dutchmen.


Junior Brenden Tarpening (Fenton, Michigan / Flint Powers) chipped in a two-goal game.

Hope returns to the ice on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-16, with a series against the University of Michigan.

On Friday at 6 p.m., the Flying Dutchmen will face Michigan at Arctic Edge in Canton. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Hope hosts the Wolverines at Edge Ice Arena in Holland Township.
