No. 2 Volleyball Earns Program's First Back-to-Back MIAA Tournament Titles

The Hope College volleyball team continues to make history.

The second-ranked Flying Dutch powered past visiting Calvin University for the third time this season on Saturday and claimed back-to-back MIAA Tournament titles for the first time in program history.

The 26-28, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15 win in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,035 gave Hope a sixth MIAA Tournament championship overall and an automatic berth in next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.

The 64-team field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. on ncaa.com.

The Flying Dutch (25-2) rallied after dropping the first set to an MIAA opponent this season. It also was the first set loss for Hope since Oct. 17, when the Flying Dutch topped No. 19 University of Chicago in five sets.

A balanced offense featuring six All-MIAA selections powered Hope, the outright regular-season MIAA champion.

Senior and two-time MIAA MVP Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) slammed a match-high 15 kills past Calvin (19-9).

Fellow All-MIAA First Team members Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) and Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) each had 13 kills.

All-MIAA Second Team selection Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) tallied 11 kills apiece.

"When opponents at the next stage look at us, they are thinking about Addie, but there are so many people stepping up and Lauren is doing a fantastic job to find hitters in places they can be in successful," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "We take a lot of pride in how balanced our offense is."

Hope never trailed during the remaining three sets. The Flying Dutch grabbed the final five points in the fourth to put an exclamation mark on the win.

Burbridge stuffed six blocks back at the Knights, while Lockett and DeWeerd each tallied four blocks.

Junior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) orchestrated the offense with a match-high 55 assists.

Senior and All-MIAA Second Team honoree Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central) had a match-high 26 digs. VanderWeide came up with 21 digs.

Hope outhit Calvin .267 to .114.
