Track and Field Sets Two Indoor School Records at GVSU Holiday Open

The Hope College men's and women's indoor track and field teams set two indoor school records and recorded five of the nation's top times during the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open on Friday.

Juniors Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins HS) and Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) broke Hope records in the 5,000 meters and the 400 meters, respectively, during the non-scoring meet.

Petruska posted a converted 5,000-meter time of 14 minutes, 44.28 seconds on GVSU's oversized track that ranks No. 1 in NCAA Division III this season. He passed Julian Morrison's 2017 Hope record of 14:56.55.

Schermerhorn bested her Hope record in the indoor 400 meters by clocking a converted time of 56.15 seconds.

Schermerhorn also went 25.18 in the 200 meters, Division III's fastest run so far this season.

In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Mary England (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) ran a converted time of 10:43.97 that's third-best in Division III.

Petruska was joined by three teammates who also clocked the nation's fastest runs.

In the 800 meters, junior Erickson Kunzler (Marne, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) posted a converted time of 1:57.14 that tops Division III.

In the 1-mile, senior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) went a converted 4:16.05 for the nation's fastest run.

Senior Tyler King (Villa Park, Illinois / Willowbrook) clocked the fifth-fastest time in Division III with a converted 4:24.38.
