The Hope College men's basketball team battled during a hard-fought loss on the road on Saturday night.
The Flying Dutchmen, now 3-5 on the season, fell to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 64-71 in Platteville, Wisconsin.
Hope pulled ahead by as much as nine points midway through the first half, but the Pioneers sank three consecutive three-pointers to diminish Hope's lead.
The opponents traded the lead back and forth until Platteville put in two free throws and yet another shot from behind the arc to take a five point lead with five remaining in the first half.
A Justice Mims' (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams HS) successful three-point shot with seconds remaining on the clock pulled Hope within reach of the Platteville lead.
But the Pioneers' Bristol Lewis responded quickly, sinking a shot from behind the arc of his own, the seventh three-pointer made in the first half by the home team.
Platteville put up its highest lead of 12 points just three minutes into second-half play.
The Flying Dutchmen rallied, and with a Jared Ryg (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) three-pointer, the Platteville lead was eroded down to just two with 13:00 left to play.
Another offensive surge fueled by three more Platteville three-pointers pushed a Hope win out of reach as time ran out.
Senior Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) led Hope with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Brady Miller (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) joined Quillan with double digit points, tallying 10.
Freshman Charles Howell (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) grabbed nine for the Flying Dutchmen.
Hope returns home after a seven-game road trip to host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m.
