Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Mackenzie McMahon

Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Matchup with Elmhurst

Sam Bowen and senior Michael Mann scored two goals apiece for the Hope College men's lacrosse team during a 12-8 loss to Elmhurst University in the first road game of the season on Saturday.

Hope is now 1-1 on the season.

Elmhurst improved to 2-1 after using seven unanswered goals during the second half to take its second and final lead of the game.

Junior Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville HS) got the Flying Dutchmen started, grabbing the first goal of the game, before Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) and junior Freddy Kopplow (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Saint Francis) tallied back-to-back goals to finish out the first quarter with Hope on top, 3-1.

Elmhurst put in a three-goal flurry to jump into the lead, 5-4, in the second quarter, but the Flying Dutchmen answered back.

Senior Sean Cunningham (South Lyon, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) and Mann put in consecutive goals, at the end of the first half, and at the start of the second half, respectively, to give the lead back to Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen scored twice over the final five minutes of game play, but it was not enough to overcome the six-goal lead Elmhurst built.

Bowen topped Hope with three assists and shared a team-high three caused-turnovers with John Foster (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central).

Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit-Jesuit) finished with three points in two goals and one assist, while sending off nine shots for Hope.

Goaltender sophomore Jack Balmforth (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) made 16 saves in the loss.

Hope returns home on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. to take on Oberlin College (Ohio) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
