Men's Lacrosse Chills Oberlin in Overtime

Midfielder Nick McCreery quickly helped the Hope College men's lacrosse team forget, for a few celebratory moments, about a wintry afternoon in Holland.

The junior from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) bounced in the game-winning shot under the crossbar 63 seconds into overtime to lift the Flying Dutchmen to a 9-8 victory against Oberlin College (Ohio) on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

McCreery's third goal of the season lifted Hope to a 2-1 overall record and handed Oberlin its first loss in three games this season.

After Oberlin won the opening faceoff of overtime, senior midfielder Raymo Blancato (Harbor Springs, Michigan / Green Mountain Valley) forced Oberlin's Peyton Lee out of the bounds with the ball at midfield for a turnover.

The Flying Dutchmen then set up their attack behind the Oberlin net. Senior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit-Jesuit) found McCreery five yards in front of the goal.

McCreery caught the pass, spun to his left and fired a low shot that caromed up into the goal.

Hope forced overtime with 1 minute, 45 seconds remaining in regulation when Mann evened the score at 8-all with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Junior midfielder David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth) had the assist.

Oberlin took an 8-7 lead with 5:12 remaining after Solomon Brennan netted his sixth goal of the season.

Two minutes earlier, the two teams traded goals in a span of nine seconds early during a two-minute, unreleasable penalty for the Flying Dutchmen.

Sophomore midfielder Liam Belote (Saline, Michigan / Saline) won the faceoff after Brennan's man-up goal and charged into the attacking zone before setting up junior attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) for his sixth goal of the season.

Hope then killed the remaining 1 minute, 18 seconds of the penalty while not allowing a shot.

Bowen and Mann shared game-high scoring honors with three goals apiece. Oberlin's Reese Ackerman also scored three times.

Senior midfielder Blaine Hynde (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) and freshman Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) also scored for the Flying Dutchmen.

Sophomore goalie Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made 13 saves for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m. Central at Lake Forest College (Ill.).
