Women's Track and Field Claims Title at Clark Atlanta Panther Classic

The Hope College women's outdoor track and field team won two events and claimed the title at the Clark Atlanta University Panther Classic on Saturday.

Led by sophomore discus thrower Kamryn Bice and freshman distance runner Mary England, the Flying Dutch recorded a first-place total of 114.5 points.

Hope finished three points ahead of runner-up and NCAA Division II Albany State University (Ga.) in the 18-team event.

Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe HS) took first in the discus with a toss of 11.84 meters (38-10 1/14). 

England (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) clocked a winning time in the 5,000 meters of 19 minutes, 11.34 seconds, and led four Hope point-earners in the event. Sophomore Alyson Kelly (Gaines, Michigan / Linden) finished runner-up at 19:12.44, followed by teammates Grace Baldauff (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Northgate) in fifth at 20:05.63 and Brigit Foley (New Hudson Michigan / St. Catherine of Siena Academy) in seventh at 20:09.67.

Hope scored in 12 more events.

In the 4x400 relay, freshman Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), freshman Payton Ball (Mason, Michigan / Mason), freshman Carli Betten (Spring Lake, Michigan / Western Michigan Christian) and freshman Annika Sytsma (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) posted a second-place time of 4:11.36.

In the javelin, senior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township) recorded a third-place toss of 31.95 meters (104-10). Senior Amanda Timonen (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) finished fourth at 30.54 meters (100-2). Sophomore Karly Roelofs (Kingsley, Michigan / Kingsley Area) took fifth at 30.47 meters (100-0).

In the high jump, junior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) cleared 1.46 meters (9-0 ½) for fifth place. Sophomore Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) was fourth at 1.46 meters (9-0 ½).

In the pole vault, two from Hope tied for third place after clearing 2.75 meters (9-0 ¼): freshman Natalie Bennett (Bruce Township, Michigan / Romeo) and sophomore Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile).

In the shot put, Bice posted a fourth-place toss of 34.47 meters (113-1). Junior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) took sixth at 32.85 meters (107-9). Freshman Olivia Smith (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) was eighth at 32.41 meters (106-4).

In 800 meters, Systma clocked a fifth-place run of 2:34.01. Sophomore Emma DeJoy (Pittsford, New York / Our Lady of Mercy) took seventh at 2:36.51.

In the 400 meters, sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids) finished fifth with a run of 59.51 seconds. Junior Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) was seventh at 1:01.18.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) recorded a sixth-place heave of 35.62 meters (116-10).

In the long jump, sophomore Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) placed sixth with a leap of 4.74 meters (15-6 ¾).

In the 4x100 relay, the Flying Dutch clocked a sixth-place run of 50.85 seconds from sophomore Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline), Leahy, sophomore Hannah Tsiang (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) and sophomore Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire / Saint Johnsbury).

In the 1,500 meters, Markham took seventh with a time of 5:07.51. England was eighth at 5:07.95.

In the triple jump, Johnson placed eighth at 10.12 meters (33-2 ½).

Hope's next meet is on Friday-Saturday, March 15-16, at Emory University in Atlanta.
