Women's Lacrosse Claims First Victory on the Oregon Trail

The long trek to Oregon started successfully for the Hope College women's lacrosse team.

The Flying Dutch won at unbeaten Willamette University, 15-9, on Tuesday during the opening leg of their spring break trip in Salem, Oregon.

A five-goal second quarter propelled Hope to a commanding halftime lead and a two-game winning streak.

The Flying Dutch (2-2) took the lead for good on Kristen Szost's first goal of the season. The senior midfielder from Jenison, Michigan (Jenison International HS) put Hope ahead 3-2 with 6 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Neither team scored until 1:39 into the second quarter. Sophomore attacker Alyssa Segura (Naples, Florida / Barron Collier) took advantage of a short-handed Willamette to score her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) recorded the assist.

The Flying Dutch scored the next four goals for an 8-2 lead: from Brown at the 12:01 mark, junior attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn) with 9:09 remaining, senior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland) with 8:25 remaining and Segura with 1:06 remaining.

Willamette (3-1) stopped Hope's run on a Claire Kiselnicki goal 12 seconds before halftime after a Flying Dutch penalty. The Bearcats never got closer than four goals.

Brown topped Hope with six points on a game-high four goals and two assists.

Segura finished with three goals, matching her career-high from Saturday's 20-15 victory at home against Oberlin College (Ohio).

Kirkpatrick chipped in two goals. The Flying Dutch had nine goalscorers in all.

Willamette outshot Hope, 31-26, but senior goalie Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) recorded a season-high 12 saves for the Flying Dutch.

Hope's next game is Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m. PDT at George Fox University in Newburg, Oregon.
