Men's Track and Field's Jonas Fraley-Burgett Wins 3,000-meter Steeplechase at Emory Classic

Hope College distance runner Jonas Fraley-Burgett made his first attempt at the 3,000-meter steeplechase a peachy one.

The sophomore from Kalamazoo, Michigan (Kalamazoo Central HS) topped a field of 14 men's runners on Friday at the Emory University Spring Break Classic in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fraley-Burgett clocked a time of 9 minutes, 56.36 seconds, which was three seconds faster than the nearest competitor.

The run propelled the Flying Dutchmen to third place at the 15-team meet. With 31 points, Hope trails first-place Emory with 62 points and second-place Reinhardt University with 45 points.

Hope earned points in five more events.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) posted a runner-up effort of 14:50.39.

In the 1,500-meter invitational, sophomore Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) posted a fifth-place and career-best run of 3:57.97. The event featured the meet's fastest 26 entrants for the 1,500.

In the 400 hurdles, senior Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) recorded a fifth-place run of 54.48 seconds.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Brendyn Mroz (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grandville) finished sixth with a career-best heave of 42.91 meters (140-9).

In the 200 meters, sophomore Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) placed eighth after clocking a time of 22.08 seconds.

The two-day meet concludes on Saturday, March 16. Track events start at 9:30 a.m.; field events at 10 a.m.
