Women's Track and Field Rises in Atlanta, Wins Emory Spring Break Classic

The ATL proved good for the Hope College women's track and field team.

The Flying Dutch claimed their first meet title of the outdoor season this weekend at the Emory University Spring Break Classic in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hope totaled 117.5 points over Friday and Saturday at Morehouse College and finished 12 points ahead of runner-up West Georgia University in the 18-team event.

The Flying Dutch recorded four first-place performances, including on Saturday the 4x800 relay of junior Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central HS), senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), freshman Annika Sytsma (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) and senior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian).

The relay clocked a winning time of 9 minutes, 38.58 seconds.

Hope scored in eight more events on Saturday.

In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Alexis Deighan (Birmingham, Michigan / Seaholm) placed second with a run of 40:45.76. Sophomore Ellie Coderre (Lisle, Illinois / Naperville North) took fifth at 43:26.26. Sophomore Claire Vellinga (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was sixth at 43:59.24.

The 4x400 relay of sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey), freshman Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) and sophomore Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) clocked a third-place time of 3:56.99.

In the 3,000 meters, freshman Grace Baldauff (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Northgate) recorded a fourth-place run of 11:29.49. Freshman Becca Scott (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) finished sixth at 12:27.43.

In the 1,500 meters, sophomore Alyson Kelly (Gaines, Michigan / Linden) posted a fourth-place time of 4:14.90. Freshman Brigit Foley (New Hudson, Michigan / St. Catherine of Siena Academy) took seventh at 5:16.46. Freshman Carli Betten (Spring Lake, Michigan / Western Michigan Christian) was eighth at 5:18.21.

The 4x400 relay of sophomore Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline), Leahy, sophomore Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire / Saint Johnsbury) and Schermerhorn placed fifth with a run of 49.46 seconds.

In the 400 meters, Leahy recorded a sixth-place time of 59.07.

In the javelin throw, senior Amanda Timonen (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) placed seventh with a toss of 35.17 meters (115 feet, 5 inches).

In the 800 meters, Amanda Markham clocked an eighth-place run of 2:21.17.

Hope's next event is Friday-Saturday, March 22-23, at the Polar Bear Classic hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
