Swimmer Greta Gidley Places Second in the Nation in the 200 Individual Medley

Hope College swimmer Greta Gidley finished as the national runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley for the second consecutive season on Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C.

The junior from Franklin, Michigan (Mercy HS) clocked a second-place time of 2 minutes. 00.45 seconds during the evening's finals at Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Championships.

Williams College (Mass.) junior Sophia Verkleeren repeated as national champion after passing Gidley during the second leg of the race, the backstroke, and finished with a winning time of 1:59.59.

Gidley's All-America First Team performance helped the Flying Dutch sit in ninth place heading into Day 2 at Greensboro Aquatic Center on Thursday, March 21. Hope has 31 points.

Sophomore Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) earned All-America Second Team honors in the 200 individual medley.

Hermann recorded a 15th-place swim of 2:05.86 during the finals.

Hope also earned All-America Second Team honors in the 200 medley relay.

Junior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), junior Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), Gidley and senior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) posted an 11th-place swim of 1:43.29.

On Thursday, Day 2, which begins at 10 a.m. with prelims, Hope will compete in four events.

The 200 freestyle relay is seeded seventh. The Flying Dutch qualified for nationals with a swim of 1:33.26.

Gidley is seeded fifth in the 100 butterfly after clocking a qualifying time of 54.87.

The 200 freestyle features sophomore Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea), who is 59th after a qualifying time of 1:57.81.

Hope's 400 medley relay is seeded ninth after a qualifying swim of 3:44.81.

The top 16 swims in each event advance to the 6 p.m. finals.

Denison University (Ohio) leads heading into Day 2 with 95 points.
