The Hope College women's lacrosse team slammed the door shut on the Hornets of Kalamazoo College on Saturday, en route to a 17-6 victory on the road.
The Flying Dutch, down by one after the first quarter after Kalamazoo's Hannah Heeren scored three of the Hornets' four goals, blasted through the remainder of the game en-route to their second-largest score margin of the season. Hope held Kalamazoo to just two goals in the final three quarters.
Hope improved to 4-0 in MIAA play, remaining at the top of the standings while holding an 8-4 overall record. The Flying Dutch hold a half-game lead over Trine University, their next opponent. On Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m., Hope plays at Trine.
Against Kalamazoo (7-2, 2-1 MIAA), Hope erupted for four unanswered second-quarter goals while shutting the Hornets out.
Four of five third-quarter goals came within a span of three and half minutes from the sticks of junior Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt HS) (2), junior Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn), and sophomore Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan DeWitt), extending Hope's lead to 12-5.
Senior Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) and Randall tacked on two more goals early in the fourth quarter just 36 seconds apart.
Randall and Kirkpatrick capped the five-goal fourth quarter to give Hope its third consecutive double-digit win against MIAA opponents.
Senior goalie Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford ) made nine saves.
Hope outshot Kalamazoo 37-16 and caused 15 of Kalamazoo's 18 turnovers.
Kirkpatrick topped Hope with six points on two goals and four assists.
Randall and sophomore Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) each racked up five goals apiece in the win. The pair of sophomores had five and six shots on goal, respectively. Randall had a game-high six draw controls.
Sophomore Ruby Heurmann (Granger, Indiana / Penn) had a team-high four caused turnovers and shared a team-high four ground balls with Yakes.
