Women's Lacrosse Wins First-Place Showdown at Trine

The Hope College women's lacrosse team moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings Saturday afternoon by pulling away in the second half to defeat Trine University 18-10 in Angola, Indiana.

The Flying Dutch, who are the defending MIAA champions, improved to 5-0 in league play and 9-4 overall with their 15th consecutive MIAA regular-season win dating back to April 2022.

Hope handed the Thunder their first conference loss. Trine fell to 4-1 in the MIAA and 10-4 overall.

Head coach Keagan Pontious was proud of her team's multi-faceted performance.

"We had great draw control team execution. Everyone in the circle was awesome," Pontious said. "Both sides of the ball played very well. Our defense adjusted to them. They have some great goal scorers and feeders. Our attack just pushed through on the fast break and created some opportunities."

Hope can clinch at least a share of the MIAA regular-season title and the top seed for next month's MIAA Tournament with a victory on Wednesday, April 24, at 4 p.m. at Albion College.

The Thunder took a 2-1 lead a little more than five minutes into the game, but Hope responded with three goals in a span of 1 minute, 17 seconds to take a lead it would not surrender the rest of the way.

Senior Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan/Lowell HS) tied the game with a goal, then senior midfielder Kristen Szost (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison International Academy) scored while the Flying Dutch had a man-up advantage. Sophomore midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) capped the flurry with an unassisted goal for a 4-2 Hope lead.

Trine kept the game close into the early stages of the second half. Hope only led 10-8 midway through the third quarter before its leaders stepped forward to break the game open.

Senior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan/Hartland) scored twice, sandwiched around a goal by sophomore attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central), during a three-goal burst that gave the Flying Dutch a 13-8 lead.

Julia Brown then put the exclamation mark on Hope's win by scoring the Flying Dutch's final four goals, including her 100th career tally. She became the fifth player in Hope women's lacrosse history to go over the 100-goal mark for her career. She finished the game with a season-high six goals on eight shots, giving her 49 goals on the season and 103 for her career.

Salazar added three goals to increase her all-time career-leading total to 186.

LaPrairie had two goals and two assists, while Szost also scored twice.

Sophomore midfielder Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) had a strong all-around game with one goal and four assists while winning 13 draw controls.

Junior attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Mishawaka Penn) chipped in three assists.

The Flying Dutch outshot the Thunder 37-24 for the contest and won 23 of 32 draw controls.

Courtney Rhodes led Trine with three goals.
