Women's Track and Field Wins Two Events at Wheaton Invite

The Hope College women's track and field team posted two first-place performances at the 11-team Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday.

Junior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland HS) won the high jump with a leap of 1.58 meters (5 feet, 2 ½ inches).

Sophomore Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) clocked the second-fastest 200-meter time while winning the event in 24.45 seconds.

Hope finished fourth at the meet with 106 points. The University of Chicago won with 171 points and was followed by North Central College, Ill. (126.5) and Carthage College, Wis. (115.5).

On Friday, a group of Flying Dutch distance runners also raced at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational. 

Senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) finished a team-best 11th out of 117 runners 

Markham's time of 16:50.48 ranks 11th in NCAA Division III this season.

At Wheaton, Hope finished 2-3 in the javelin. Senior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township) placed runner-up with a toss of 35.33 meters (115-11). Junior Amanda Timonen (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) took third at 34.05 (111-08).

In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn ran a third-place time of 12.17 seconds.

In the 1,500 meters, senior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) recorded a third-place run of 4:40.36.

In the 5,000 meters, senior Emily Scott (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) clocked a third-place time of 19:19.33.

In the triple jump, sophomore Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) finished third with a season-best leap of 10.75 meters (35-3 ¼).


In the 4x400 relay, Hope placed third. Freshman Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), Schermerhorn, freshman Stella Farmer (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) and senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) clocked a third-place time of 4:00.55.

In the 800 meters, Amanda Markham led four scoring Flying Dutch runners by placing third at 2:18.98. Moran took fifth at 2:19.61. Quillan finished sixth at 2:19.73. Sophomore Madison Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline) was eighth at 2:20.67.

In the discus, sophomore Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) posted a sixth-place toss of 38.15 meters (125-2).

In the shot put, Bice finished seventh at 11.94 meters (39-2 ¼).

Hope's next meet is Friday-Saturday, April 19-20, at the Grand Valley State University Al Owens Classic.
