Sara Schermerhorn Breaks Two Long-Standing Outdoor Track School Records

Sara Schermerhorn etched her name again in the Hope College women's track and field record book this weekend by sprinting past two long-standing outdoor marks.

The sophomore from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS) set Flying Dutch records in the 200 and 400 meters Friday during the two-day, non-scoring Grand Valley State University Al Owens Classic.

In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn clocked a time of 24.01 seconds that eclipsed Nora Kuiper's 2009 mark of 24.35 seconds. Her run is the 21st fastest all-time in NCAA Division III history and first in the nation this season.

In the 400 meters, Schermerhorn recorded a run of 56.00 seconds that surpassed Lindsay Lange's 2005 mark of 56.35. Her time is the sixth-fastest in Division III this season.

Hope also finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central) posted a winning run of 11 minutes, 26.89 seconds. 

Junior Laura Taylor (Yorkville, Illinois / Yorkville) took fifth at 12:24.11. Junior Kennedy Kuhlmann (Grand Blanc, Michigan / Grand Blanc) placed sixth at 12:31.38. Freshman Lucy James (La Grange Park, Illinois / Willows Academy) was seventh at 13:17.69.

In the 4x400 relay, Hope finished runner-up as sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey), junior Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) and Schermerhorn posted a time of 4:30.58.

In the triple jump, junior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) took second with a leap of 9.84 meters (32-3 ½). Freshman Kiersten Schmitt (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) was third at 9.51 meters (31-2 ½).

In the discus, sophomore Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) recorded a second-place toss of 40.41 meters (132 feet, 7 inches). Junior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) was seventh at 36.23 meters (118-10). 

In the javelin, senior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township) posted a runner-up throw of 33.94 meters (111-4). 

Junior Amanda Timonen (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) placed third at 33.57 meters (110-2). Senior Lauren Tocco (Traverse City, Michigan / Saint Francis High School) took fourth at 32.53 meters (106-9). Sophomore Karly Roelofs (Kingsley, Michigan / Kingsley Area) was 10th at 25.49 meters (83-7).

In the 1,500 meters, senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) finished third with a run of 4:38.27. Struck was 10th at 4:53.24.

In the 400 meters, two Hope runners joined Schermerhorn in the Top 10. Leahy placed fourth at 59.53. Moran was 10th at 1:02.01.

In the 400 hurdles, sophomore Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) finished fourth at 1:09.46. Sophomore Frances Cozzens (Lyman, N.H. / Saint Johnsbury Academy) placed fifth at 1:11.48. Freshman Ashley Zimmerman Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) was seventh at 1:17.36.

In the high jump, Schram tied for fourth after clearing 1.52 meters (4-11 ¾). Sophomore Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) posted the same height but finished sixth. Freshman Bridget Crombie (Lansing, Michigan / Home School) tied for ninth at 1.42 meters (4-8).

In the shot put, Robrahn delivered Hope's top throw of the day at 12.98 meters (42-7) and finished seventh in the invite division.

Also, in the shot put, Strotman finished sixth in her division with a toss of 11.34 meters (37-2 ½). Roelofs placed eighth at 10.63 meters (34-10 ½). Senior Alana Policastro (Geneva, Illinois / Geneva Community) was ninth at 10.57 meters (34-8 ¼).

In the hammer throw, sophomore Elsa Clausen (Seneca, Illinois / Oswego East) recorded a seventh-place throw of 39.29 meters (128-11). Sophomore Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) was ninth at 37.93 meters (124-5).


In the 100 meters, sophomore Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline) took seventh at 13.37 seconds.


In the pole vault, senior Bethany Colbrunn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) placed ninth after clearing 3.0 meters (9-10).


Hope's next meet is Saturday, April 27, at noon at GVSU.
