Four Selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week

Four from Hope College have been chosen as MIAA Athletes of the Week: juniors Trent Johnson (baseball) and Derik Smith (men's outdoor field), and sophomores Sara Schermerhorn (women's track) and Amanda Lopykinski (women's tennis).

Johnson (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) is the MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and in his career.

The business major fired two complete games to help the Flying Dutchmen defeat The University of Olivet, 11-0, in seven innings on April 15 and Albion College, 15-2, in seven innings on Saturday.

The right-hander recorded a 1.29 earned run average while striking out 16 batters and walking three.

Smith (Niles, Michigan / Edwardsburg) is the MIAA Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

The physical and health education major finished eighth in the long jump at the Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Classic with a leap of 6.66 meters (21 feet, 10 ¼ inches). Smith ranks third in the MIAA in the event, second in America's T64 ParaAthletics Rankings, and fourth in the World ParaAthletics Rankings.

Smith also took ninth in the javelin at GVSU with a throw of 36.35 meters (119-3).

Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) is the MIAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career.

At GVSU, Schermerhorn clocked the fastest 200-meter time in NCAA Division III this season and 21st all-time with a first-place and school-record run of 24.01 seconds.

Schermerhorn also set a school record in the 400 meters with a first-place run of 56 seconds flat that ranks her sixth in the nation this season.

Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) is the MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the third time this season and the fourth time in her career.

The neuroscience major won matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Flying Dutch on Saturday during a 9-0 victory against defending MIAA regular-season champion Kalamazoo College. Hope clinched an MIAA title share with the victory.
