Two Hope College swimmers have been named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® men's and women's swimming & diving teams selected by the College Sports Communicators as second-team honorees: senior Ben Catton and junior Greta Gidley.

This is Catton's second Academic All-America® selection to the men's team. The business and economics double major made the second team as a junior.

This is the first time Gidley, an elementary education major, has been voted to Academic All-America® women's team.

Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) and Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) join three other Hope student-athletes who have been named to Academic All-America® teams this school year. Dylan Clem in football, Olivia Fiebing in volleyball and Addie VanderWeide in volleyball were honored last fall.

In March, Catton swam to Second Team All-America honors in five events at the NCAA Division III Championships, including an 11th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and a 16th-place finish in the 100 butterfly.

Catton also helped three relays place at nationals: 200 freestyle relay (13th), 400 freestyle relay (15th) and 400 medley relay (16th).

In February, Catton claimed the MIAA title in the 100 freestyle.

Gidley finished as national runner-up and earned First Team All-America honors for the second consecutive season at the NCAA Championships.

Gidley also claimed Second All-America distinction in four events, including the 100 butterfly (11th) and the 100 freestyle (15th). Gidley helped the Flying Dutch earn Second Team All-America honors in the 200 medley relay (11th) and the 400 medley relay (12th).

In February, Gidley was named MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Year for the first time after leading Hope to a fourth consecutive league championship. Gidley finished first in three events at the conference meet: the 200 medley relay (MIAA record), the 100 butterfly, and the 400 medley relay (MIAA record).

The Division III Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist the College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Division III Academic All-America® program.
