Three Selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week

Three from Hope College received MIAA Athlete of the Week honors: senior Molly Frederickson in women's lacrosse, junior Caden Brainard in men's lacrosse and sophomore Sara Schermerhorn in women's outdoor track and field.

Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell HS) is the MIAA Women's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week for the first time.

The midfielder and physical/health education major averaged 3.0 draw controls, 2.0 goals and 1.5 assists during two Flying Dutch home victories last week.

Frederickson recorded a shot-on-goal percentage of .857 during a 17-9 victory against Alma College and an 18-8 victory against Calvin University. Both teams finished second and third, respectively, in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll behind Hope.

Brainard (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) is the MIAA Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season.

The face-off specialist and mechanical engineering major contributed to the Flying Dutchmen's 14-10 win at Albion College in the MIAA opener on Saturday.

Brainard won 59.1% of faceoffs (13-22), scooped up nine ground balls and scored one goal.

Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) is the MIAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and the fourth time in her career.

On Saturday, Schermerhorn raced to first-place performances in the 200 meters and 4x400 relay at the Grand Valley State University Meet.

Schermerhorn clocked a season-best 200 time of 24.49 seconds, which ranks third in NCAA Division III and first in the MIAA.

With Schermerhorn's help, the Flying Dutch recorded a first-place 4x400 relay time of 3:56.25, which ranks 10th in the nation.

Schermerhorn also finished runner-up in the 100 meters after posting a run of 12.34 seconds. Schermerhorn helped the 4x100 relay place second with a time of 48.71 seconds, which ranks 33rd in Division III.
