Six Qualify for NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Six Hope College runners are Myrtle Beach-bound next week for the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships: Catherine Leahy, Erin Moran, Rebecca Markham, Sara Schermerhorn, Connor Vachon and Jasmine Zimmerman.

They have qualified to race during the three-day meet taking place on Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25, at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. All three days of the competition will be streamed on ncaa.com.

Markham, a senior distance runner, and Schermerhorn, a sophomore sprinter, will compete in two individual women's events apiece.  Schermerhorn also will run in one relay with Leahy, Moran and Zimmerman.

Vachon will race in one individual men's event.

On Thursday, Hope will compete in four events: 200 meters, 1,500 meters, 10,000 meters and the 4x400 relay.

In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West HS) tied for the third-fastest qualifying run with a time of 24.01 seconds. Schermerhorn finished 16th in the nation at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Schermerhorn placed 11th in the nation in the 200 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

Prelims begin at 6:40 p.m. Saturday's finals are at 6:40 p.m.

In the 4x400 relay, the Flying Dutch are seeded 15th with a run of 3:49.28. Schermerhorn will run with Leahy, a sophomore from Elk Rapids, Michigan (Elk Rapids); Moran, a senior from Arlington Heights, Illinois (John Hersey); and Zimmerman, a junior from Byron Center, Michigan (Home School).

Hope was the MIAA champion in the event this season.

Prelims start at 8:15 p.m. Saturday's finals are at 7:50 p.m.

In the 10,000 meters, Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), is seeded ninth for the final after a qualifying time of 35:11.54. The civil engineering major was the MIAA champion in the event this season.

In the 1,500 meters, Vachon, a junior from Jenison, Michigan (Jenison) is seeded 18th with a qualifying time of 3:47.63. The secondary education major is a two-time MIAA champion in the 1,500 meters this season. 

Prelims start at 5:50 p.m. Saturday's finals are at 4:35 p.m.

On Friday, Schermerhorn will compete in the 400 meters. Schermerhorn is seeded 18th with a time of 56.0 seconds.

Friday's prelims begin at 5 p.m. Saturday's finals are 5:10 p.m.

On Saturday, Markham will run in the 5,000-meter final at 7 p.m. Markham, the 2024 MIAA champion, is seeded 17th at 16:46.29.

Markham qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March in the 5,000 meters.
