Rebecca Markham Runs to All-America 10,000-Meter Honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Rebecca Markham joined another elite group of Hope College distance runners on Thursday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The senior from Hoffman Estates, Illinois (William Fremd HS) became the fourth different Flying Dutch runner to earn All-America honors in the outdoor 10,000 meters.

Markham recorded a seventh-place time of 35 minutes, 57.75 seconds during Day 1 of the three-day meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The run was the second-fastest for a Flying Dutch runner in the event at nationals.

It is the sixth time a Hope runner claimed All-America honors in the women's 10,000 meters. Two previously accomplished the feat twice: Ana Tucker in 2022 and 2023, and Marcia VanderSall in 1991 and 1993. Jennifer Ernst raced to All-America honors in 1999.

Last fall, Markham raced away in cross country with All-America and MIAA Most Valuable Runner honors for the first time. In March, Markham qualified for indoor nationals in the 5,000 meters.

Hope is tied for 30th place with two points.

The Flying Dutch competed in two other events on Thursday.

In the 200 meters, sophomore Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) finished 14th in the nation with a time of 24.26 seconds during preliminaries.

In the 4x400 relay, Hope finished 15th. Sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey), freshman Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) and junior Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) clocked a time of 4:00.97.
