Sara Schermerhorn Clocks Second-Fastest NCAA Qualifying Time, Sprints into Women's 400-Meter Final

Hope College sprinter Sara Schermerhorn sizzled on the track during a hot afternoon in South Carolina.

The sophomore from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS) will race for an NCAA Division III Championship in the women's 400 meters this weekend after clocking the second-fastest time during qualifying on Friday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

With a run of 54.98 seconds, Schermerhorn cut a second off her previous Hope record of 56 seconds flat.

Schermerhorn will race in the eight-runner national final on Saturday, May 25, at 5 p.m.

Also, on Saturday, senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) will run in the 5,000-meter final at 6:10 p.m.

Both races can be watched on ncaa.com.

Schermerhorn aims to become the Flying Dutch's second All-American in the 400 meters.

In 2006, Lindsay Lange placed seventh in the 400-meter final at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades.

On Friday, Schermerhorn was second during qualifying to only Emma Kelley of Washington University in St. Louis, who went 54.41.

Both Schermerhorn and Kelley ran in the same heat on Friday. Kelley won the 800-meter outdoor title last season as a junior.
