Grant Hassenrik Propels Men's Soccer Past Lake Forest in Dramatic Fashion

Grant Hassenrik delivered as a super sub for the Hope College men's soccer team.

The junior midfielder scored twice late in the second half to propel the Flying Dutchmen to a thrilling 2-1 victory against Lake Forest College (Illinois) on Friday in the season opener at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hassenrik's first two collegiate goals couldn't have come at better times than the 71st and 76th minutes.

Hope trailed for 50 minutes against the 2023 Midwest Conference Tournament champions before Hassenrik (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) struck.

Head coach David Blahnik said it was an awesome moment for the team and Hassenrik.

"We were all happy for Grant. He's a legacy player, his dad played here. His family loves Hope," Blahnik said. "All he's ever wanted to do was play for Hope and help us win a game. He did that today. Very deserving. He has sacrificed to come and play with this team."

Matt Hassenrik '00, Grant's father, was a four-year letterwinner and remains a Flying Dutchmen co-record holder for most assists in a single season with 13 in 1999.

Grant Hassenrik entered Friday's game for the first time during the 59th minute. Hope trailed 1-0 after Gustavo Muchado's first-half strike.

Twelve minutes later, Hassenrik pounced on a loose ball following a Lake Forest goalkeeper punch out of a crossing attempt. From just outside the center of the penalty area, Hassenrik blasted a twisting equalizer into the lower right corner of the net.

Five minutes and eight seconds later, Hassenrik buried a long cross from junior co-captain Matthew Davidson (Grand Ledge, Michigan / Grand Ledge) into the upper right corner of the net. The stunning turn of events set off a jubilant celebration for the Flying Dutchmen down the sideline.

Hope then preserved the victory by not allowing a Lake Forest shot the remainder of the game. The Flying Dutchmen outshot the Foresters, 9-1, during the second half and 17-7 total.

Senior goalie Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) recorded one save for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. vs. LeTourneau University (Texas). LeTourneau fell at Calvin University, 4-0, on Friday.

Individual game tickets can be ordered through the Hope Ticket Office online or at the gate beginning at 6 p.m.
