No. 2-Ranked Volleyball Wins Twice in Minnesota, Ups Record to 3-0

The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team flashed a familiar resilience to complete an unbeaten start to the 2024 season.

The Flying Dutch rallied from a two-set deficit to down No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis in five sets on Saturday at the University of Northwestern (Minnesota) "Aces for Joy" Tournament.

Hope won four five-set matches during the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament en route to a national runner-up finish.

Later in the afternoon on Saturday, the Flying Dutch recorded a three-set sweep of Coe College (Iowa) and raised their record to 3-0.

Against WashU, the Flying Dutch won 17-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12. Hope closed the match with four of the fifth set's final five points.

Seniors Addie VanderWeide, Alison DeWeerd and Annie Lockett powered the attack with double-digit kills.

VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) netted a match-best 17 kills. The 6-1 outside hitter also had 15 digs.

DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian HS) chipped in 16 kills. Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) had 13 kills.

Junior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) collected 53 assists.

Against Coe, Hope won 25-11, 25-23, 25-18 after hitting .299 for the match.

VanderWeide delivered a match-high 14 kills. DeWeerd and Lockett had seven apiece.

Lee finished with 29 assists and 12 digs.

Hope is back in action on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7, at the MIAA/NCAC Crossover hosted by Calvin University. The Flying Dutch's first match is 4 p.m. Friday against Denison University (Ohio).
