Volleyball Serves Up Victory in MIAA/NCAC Crossover Opener


The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team served up a sizzling start to the MIAA/North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover.

The Flying Dutch delivered 13 service aces to two by Denison University (Ohio) that sparked a 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 victory on Friday at Calvin University.

Hope, which improved to 4-0 overall, will conclude the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7, with matches against Ohio Wesleyan University at 10:30 a.m. and Wittenberg University (Ohio) at 1 p.m.

Six Flying Dutch served at least one ace.

Senior Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central HS) recorded a team-best four aces while racking up a match-best 11 digs.

Four teammates chipped in two aces apiece: senior middle hitter Allison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) senior outside hitter Eva Hartung (Lisle, Illinois / Naperville North), senior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline), and senior outside hitter Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

Sophomore defensive specialist Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) had one ace.


Lee, the reigning MIAA Specialist of the Week, also contributed 34 assists and four kills.

VanderWeide posted a match-high 13 kills and a .407 attack percentage.

Junior middle hitter Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) added seven kills, three blocks and a .357 attack percentage.

DeWeerd finished with six kills. 

Freshman middle hitter Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) recorded five kills.
