Second-Ranked Volleyball Drops Rematch with No. 1 Juniata

The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team enjoyed a festive start to a rematch with top-ranked Juniata University (Pa.) on Friday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,922.

Juniata rallied to take the final three sets and spoil the beach party with a 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 victory.

It was Hope's first loss in eight matches this season.

The 6-0 Eagles, the two-time defending national champions, pushed their NCAA Division III-record winning streak to 68 matches.

Juniata defeated the Flying Dutch in three sets at the 2023 national championship match in Claremont, California.

Head coach Becky Schmidt said that Hope had improved since the teams' December meeting.

"I think we handled the serve a little better this time around. We knew what to expect a little bit. We made it a priority since the last time we played them to be able to stand up to that kind of service pressure. I was pleased with our team on that front," Schmidt said. "[Juniata] played really disciplined and aggressive defense. In sets two and three we were very predictable, not just with what kind of sets we were running but where we were attacking out of it.

"I thought in the fourth set we did a better job of mixing up our shots and attacking different locations on the court. We were just exposed a few times. You can't do that against a really good team."

Juniata overcame a season-high 15 service errors behind the setting of Coldwater, Michigan, native Olivia Foley, who shared the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Co-National Player of the Year honors last season with Hope outside hitter Addie VanderWeide.

Foley, the reigning AVCA National Player of the Year, recorded a match-high 46 assists to go along with seven kills.

Three Juniata hitters finished with double-digit kills, including Kennedy Christy with a match-high 20. The Eagles hit .291 as a team to Hope's .162.

VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the Flying Dutch with 17 kills.

Junior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) chipped in nine kills.

Seniors Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) and Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), totaled seven kills apiece.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, at DeVos Fieldhouse with matches against Otterbein University (Ohio) at 11:30 a.m. and sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 2 p.m.

There will be a free team poster giveaway after the Oshkosh match.
