Women's Soccer Pulls Out Dramatic Victory vs. Illinois Tech

Juniors Ainsley Harris, Claudia Folkert and Lina Rea flipped a potentially deflating moment for the Hope College women's soccer team into a joyous celebration.

Less than 30 seconds after Illinois Tech scored a tying goal late on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium, Harris and Folkert set up Rea for the winning goal in a 2-1 Flying Dutch victory.

Hope won for the second time this week and evened its record at 2-2-1. Illinois Tech dropped to 3-2 after the non-league loss.

Associate head coach Elliot Slenk said he was proud of the Flying Dutch for their resiliency and composure in a pressure-packed moment. Timeouts could not be called to set up a winning strategy.

Slenk led the team because head coach Holly Van Noord was being inducted into her alma mater's Athletic Hall of Fame at Liberty University (Virginia).

"To come down and score in 30 seconds speaks a lot about their beliefs and their grit," Slenk said. "The goal was a product of being hungry in the box and pressuring their defense. Big credit to Claudia for looking for Lina, so she had the chance to put away the game-winner."

The game's three goals all came during the final 15 minutes.

Senior Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) buried her second goal of the season in the 75th minute on a penalty kick after Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) was brought down in the box by an Illinois Tech defender.

The Flying Dutch remained ahead until there were 2 minutes, 20 seconds remaining and Illinois Tech fouled in the box.

Lucy Jorjorian launched the PK into the right corner of the net to pull Illinois Tech even.

On the kickoff, Hope quickly sent the ball into the attacking zone. After two failed clearing attempts just seconds apart, the ball landed at the feet of Harris just outside the box.

Harris sent it forward a few feet to Folkert (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central), who dropped it to Rea (Macomb, Michigan / Utica).

After taking a couple of steps forward, Rea released a right-footed shot past a diving Hailey Flannagan in goal. Rea's first goal of the season rolled to the far side of the net.

With only 1:54 remaining, the Flying Dutchmen went from disappointment to jubilation. The match could have ended in a draw since neither overtime nor shootouts are played during the regular season any more.

The two teams combined for 34 shots: Hope with 20 and Illinois Tech with 14.

Both goalkeepers finished with five saves: Flannagan and Hope senior Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan / Western).

The Flying Dutch aim to continue their win streak on Saturday, Sept. 21, at noon Central when they play at sixth-ranked University of Chicago.
