Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 25-Ranked Chicago

The Hope College women's soccer team upended nationally-ranked University of Chicago on its turf again on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch won the non-league matinee, 2-1, after senior Carley Wagasky scored to break a 1-1 tie late in the second half.

It was Hope's second victory at Chicago in as many tries. The Flying Dutch won, 2-1, in 2022.

"Today's win against UChicago, a nationally-ranked team, resulted from our grit and mental sharpness for 90 minutes," head coach Holly Van Noord said. "I was proud of our overall team effort and excited to carry that momentum in the rest of the season."

Hope extended its win streak to three games. The Flying Dutch are now 3-2-1 on the season.

Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) recorded the game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the second half.

It was Wagasky's third goal of the season.

The score remained deadlocked for 60 minutes after the teams traded first-half goals.

Chicago (5-2) pulled even on Sarah Ginsburg's unassisted goal in the 26th minute.

The Flying Dutch led 1-0 after junior Avery Coykendall (Plymouth, Michigan / Canton) struck during the 19th minute.

It was Coykendall's first collegiate goal.

"Both goals were a product of our team's composure on defense and then urgency in the attack," Van Noord said.

Sophomore Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) notched her team-leading third assist on the play.

Chicago outshot Hope by an 11-8 margin.

Senior goalkeeper Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) made the only save of the game between the two teams.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. Central at Illinois Wesleyan University.
