Women's Soccer Stuns Seven-Win Ohio Wesleyan with Late Game-Winning Goal

Halle Barnard's hustle, Bri Rose's perfect corner kick and Carley Wagasky's heady play delivered a dramatic victory for a red-hot Hope College women's soccer team.

The Flying Dutch topped a seven-win opponent on Friday, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University, 1-0, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium after scoring off a set piece with 3 ½ minutes remaining.

Wagasky's game-winning goal propelled Hope to a five-game winning streak and a 5-2-1 overall record. Ohio Wesleyan, which previously beat two other MIAA opponents this season, slipped to 7-2 overall.

With time winding down, the Flying Dutch finally broke through after dominating the second half. Hope outshot Ohio Wesleyan by a 9-1 margin after halftime.

The decisive sequence started when Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) chased down a ball rolling toward the end line. The sophomore knocked it off an Ohio Wesleyan defender trying to box her out.

Rose (Hudsonville, Michigan / Unity Christian) took the corresponding corner kick from the far side of the field. The sophomore launched a high-arching kick into the middle of the penalty area.

Coming from the near side, Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) headed the ball through traffic and into the net, setting off a jubilant celebration.

It was Wagasky's team-leading seventh goal of the season and the fifth game in a row with a goal.

The 30-second span, fueled by Barnard, Rose and Wagasky, was beautiful to watch unfold, head coach Holly Van Noord said.

"Halle totally earned that corner kick with a disciplined mentality to take a chance it probably wasn't in her favor. She fought hard for it," Van Noord said. "Bri is so talented with her set pieces. It's a huge tool for us. She gives the team confidence, too. It's a huge opportunity for us when she's on the field.

"It's been evident with Carley in practice. She treats practice like a game. Her mentality to work hard has not let up since the beginning of the season. She's really forcing a lot of turnovers and getting a lot of opportunities in the box and executing."

Defensively, Hope limited Ohio Wesleyan to six shots for the game.

It was the Flying Dutch's first shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) made five saves for the Flying Dutch.

"We're very proud of the win because Ohio Wesleyan is a very well-coached team. They play hard and super well together," Van Noord said.

Hope's next game is the MIAA opener on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. at The University of Olivet.
