Men's Basketball Erupts for Another Big MIAA Victory

Another day, another rousing performance from the Hope College men's basketball team.

The Flying Dutchmen completed a dominant opening week to MIAA play by soaring past Alma College, 95-46, on Saturday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,910.

On Wednesday, Hope (7-6, 2-0 MIAA) rolled past The University of Olivet, 77-45, at home, with the best defensive performance in a league opener since the 1950-51 season.

Against Alma, the Flying Dutchmen finished the last nine minutes of the first half on a 34-12 run for a 52-30 halftime lead. Hope then outscored the winless Scots, 33-4, over the first 12-plus minutes after halftime.

"The biggest thing was how we started the second half," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "We played really well the last 10 minutes of the first half but can you sustain it? I thought we did a great job of getting decisive with all of our actions. Then it gets fun. The thing about this team is that as deep as we are, we don't feel there's a big dropoff with the defensive intensity."

Saturday marked the second consecutive season the Flying Dutchmen held multiple MIAA opponents under 50 points in the same season. And, it's just the first week of league play.

The next game for Hope is Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. on the road against Kalamazoo College. The Flying Dutchmen are playing the second game in a Hope-Kalamazoo women's and men's doubleheader.

Hope limited Alma to 29.2% field-goal shooting (19-65), including 13.3% from 3-point range. The Scots committed 18 turnovers.

The Flying Dutchmen were sizzling on offense.

Hope shot over 50% from the field in both halves for the second consecutive game, including 62.96% in the first half (17-27). The Flying Dutchmen also fired 57.1% from 3-point range (12-21).

Points came from 13 different Hope players, including 14 apiece from junior guard Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing HS) and sophomore forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart). Neither Wourman or Hovey saw more than 20 minutes of game action.

Junior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and sophomore forward Simon Neuhaus (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) chipped in 10 points apiece.

Freshman forward Charles Howell (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) added a career-high eight points.
