Top-Ranked Men's Hockey Freezes Saginaw Valley State with Two Shutouts

Shutouts from goalkeepers Maclane Schick and Sebastian Wigfield propelled the Hope College men's ice hockey team to a weekend sweep of Saginaw Valley State University's ACHA Division I team.

The Flying Dutchmen, ranked No. 1 in ACHA Division III, won 3-0 on Friday on home ice at Griff's IceHouse West and 5-0 on Saturday in Saginaw.

Hope (21-2-1 overall) has shut out three consecutive opponents and given up only one goal in four games during the new year.

On Friday, Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler HS) recorded 13 saves during the game. The senior faced only three shots apiece during the first two periods.

The Flying Dutchmen received goals from three different skaters: sophomore right Griffin Riemersma (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) during the first period, freshman Cade Pratt (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) during the second period and junior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) during the third period.

On Saturday, Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius College Prep) stopped 23 shots.

Pratt chipped in a goal and an assist. Riemersma also scored.

The Flying Dutchmen also picked up goals from junior forward Gunnar Suidinski (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville), junior forward Keegan McNamara (Linden, Michigan / Fenton) and junior forward Hunter Maschke (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central).

Hope returns to action on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 24-25, with a two-game series against Ferris State University.

The Flying Dutchmen lead the Michigan College Hockey Conference West Division with a 7-0-1 record and 15 points.

Four division games remain for Hope, including the Ferris State series. The Flying Dutchmen are one point ahead of second-place Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University.

Hope hosts Ferris State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Griff's IceHouse West. Saturday's 7 p.m. game will be played at Cedar Rink Ice Rink in Cedar Springs.
