ACHA Men's Hockey Shuts Out Roosevelt Twice in GL6 Opener

The 21st-ranked Hope College men's hockey team used a potent power play to make its first GL6 series a memorable one.

The Flying Dutchmen scored five times with the man advantage over two games against Roosevelt University (Illinois), powering 6-0 and 7-0 victories on Friday and Saturday, respectively.


Hope improved to 9-1 overall in American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 play and 2-0 in the GL6.


On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen jumped to a 2-0 lead at Griff's IceHouse West behind power-play goals from freshman center Logan Nickolaus (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Wisconsin Windigo NAHL) with 2:44 remaining in the first period and senior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central / Shreveport Mudbugs NAHL) just 16 seconds into the second. Hope finished with three power-play goals in the game.


Nickolaus added his second goal of the night at even strength with 7:30 remaining in the second period for a 3-0 lead.


Sophomore goalie Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius College Prep / Battle Creek Kernels / USPHL Premier) recorded a 17-save shutout.


On Saturday in Bensenville, Illinois, the Flying Dutchmen broke open a scoreless game in the second period by striking for two power-play goals and a short-handed one.


Onstott's power-play goal 4:12 into the period gave Hope a 1-0 lead. Nearly 8½ minutes later, sophomore center Ryan Jaros (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central / Battle Creek Kernels / USPHL Premier) doubled the advantage on the power play.


Sophomore left wing Cade Pratt (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Mercer Chiefs NCDC) capped a decisive second period by scoring short-handed.


Wigfield stopped 16 shots for his fourth shutout of the season.


The Flying Dutchmen return to the ice Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31–Nov. 1, for a series against Calvin University's ACHA Division 1 team.


Hope faces the Knights on Friday at 8 p.m. at Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Flying Dutchmen host Calvin at Griff's IceHouse West in Holland Township. Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased at the door while supplies last.
