Two Soccer Standouts Claim MIAA Athlete of the Week Accolades

Two Hope College sophomores have been selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week: defender Adelyn Raad in women's soccer and midfielder Benjamin Smitley in men's soccer.

This is the second time this season—and in her career—that Raad (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) has received the MIAA's weekly defensive honor.

It is the first such honor for Smitley (Wyoming, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central).

Raad contributed all over the field during the Flying Dutch's 2-0 victory at Adrian College on Wednesday and a 3-2 win against Kalamazoo College on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The defender anchored the back line in a gritty, rain-soaked performance against Adrian, helping limit one of the MIAA's top goal scorers and keeping the Bulldogs scoreless. Raad also scored the Flying Dutch's second goal to seal the victory.

Raad added two assists against Kalamazoo and helped hold the Hornets scoreless after halftime.

Smitley delivered on defense, powering the Flying Dutchmen to two shutout victories last week.

The midfielder led Hope's effort to hold Alma College to just three shots on goal during a 4-0 win on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutchmen did not allow a shot on goal during a 2-0 victory at Adrian on Saturday.
