No. 7 Volleyball Passes Rematch Test, Tops Trine in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

Hope advances to host the title match vs. Calvin

Faced with another barrage of tough serves while trying to close out the same opponent that tested them last week, the Hope College volleyball team rose to the challenge earlier this time.

The seventh-ranked Flying Dutch swept fourth-seeded Trine University in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse, one week after being pushed to five sets by the Thunder.

Head coach Becky Schmidt said her team improved at handling Trine's challenging serve in the rematch.

"I think we passed really well," Schmidt said after the 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 victory. "That was the big difference in the sets we lost to them last week. You could tell they were serving us tough to try to get us out of system. I thought our passers really stepped into today, got underneath the ball and gave our setter a chance to run our offense. Then we were able to find, especially for our middles, successful situations."

Hope (22-5) now heads into the MIAA Tournament final against second-seeded Calvin University on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch are seeking their third consecutive MIAA Tournament title.

Tickets can be purchased online through the MIAA website or at the door beginning at 6 p.m.

"It's what we're working for all season … to be our best at the end of the season," Schmidt said. "There are things we're continuing to do to be a different team than we were about a month ago. I'm excited about our continued development and fired up for the match."

Against Trine, the Flying Dutch totaled only three service-return errors on Friday against the Thunder (11-15), compared with 12 during the Nov. 7 match.

All-MIAA Second Team junior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Michigan / Cincinnati Christian) recorded a match-high 15 digs for the Orange and Blue.

Senior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) added nine digs and six kills.

Senior Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline) contributed seven digs and a match-high 34 assists. Earlier in the day, Lee was named Hope's 10th MIAA Most Valuable Player in volleyball.

Lee now needs 14 more assists to become Hope's first setter to reach 5,000 career assists.

The Flying Dutch hit .327 as a team. All-MIAA First Team junior Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) posted a match-high 12 kills.

All-MIAA First Team sophomore Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) and senior Kate Luurtsema (Alto, Michigan / South Christian) finished with eight kills apiece.
