Women's Soccer Outlasts Trine in a PK Shootout, Earns MIAA Tournament Finals Berth

Hope will play at Calvin University in the finals on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m.

With the season on the line, goalkeeper Clara Feenstra and forward Ainsley Harris trusted their instincts and training to deliver when the Hope College women's soccer team needed them most.

A second-round leaping save from Feenstra and a fourth-round shootout-clinching goal from Harris sent the Flying Dutch to this weekend's MIAA Tournament championship match.

Hope outscored Trine University 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 semifinal draw Tuesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Flying Dutch (12-3-3) will play at top-seeded Calvin University in the final on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. The winner earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Calvin (13-4) defeated fourth-seeded Kalamazoo College 3-1 on Tuesday.

"We have a lot of momentum going from this game, a tough semifinal," head coach Holly Van Noord said. "I think we had to empty the tank tonight and dig in deep. To go into a championship game with that kind of momentum is exciting."

With 110 minutes of regulation and overtime unable to determine a winner, the match was decided by a best-of-five penalty-kick shootout.

Trine (9-4-6) shot first, and both teams converted their opening attempts.

In the second round, Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) read Abbey Scheil's attempt perfectly, diving to her right for the save.

"I was pumped and ready to go," Feenstra said. "There was no doubt in my mind. Once you see the ball, you just have to go. I felt that and read the ball quickly enough. In a PK, you just want to get to the post as far and as fast as you can."

The Thunder did not score again in the shootout, missing their final two attempts wide and high, opening the door for Hope.

Defender Olivia Dieppa (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) also teamed up for Hope's equalizer in regulation.

The two tied the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute when Dieppa redirected a cross from Harris from near the edge of the penalty area for her ninth goal of the season. Trine had taken an early lead on a goal from Abby Robison after a failed Hope clearance of a long entry pass.

In the shootout, Dieppa buried her third-round attempt high into the upper-right corner.

On Hope's next attempt, Harris sealed the match by snapping her shot just under the upper-left crossbar.

Harris said she recited Philippians 4:13 as she stepped up to take the decisive kick.

"In that moment, the verse going through my mind is, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,'" Harris said. "I texted my coach before this that I was confident to take a PK. That verse brought me comfort and confidence."

This marked the fourth time Hope has played in a penalty-kick shootout during the MIAA Tournament and the third time the Flying Dutch advanced.
