14th-Ranked ACHA Men's Hockey Skates Past Calvin, Edged by GVSU

Hope places runner-up at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament

The 14th-ranked Hope College men's hockey team finished runner-up at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament over the weekend.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated No. 10 Calvin University, 4-2, on Friday at Eagles Ice Arena but lost to Grand Valley State University, 3-2, on Saturday.

Hope heads into the Christmas break with a 16-5 overall record.

On Friday, sophomore goalie Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius College Prep) stopped 52 shots against the Knights.

Junior right wing Brady Breit (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) scored twice, including the game-winner.

Sophomore left wing Cade Pratt (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Mercer Chiefs NCDC) assisted on goals by junior defenseman Trevor Davis (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) and senior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central / Shreveport Mudbugs NAHL).

On Saturday, GVSU jumped to a 3-0 lead with three second-period goals.

The Flying Dutchmen finally scored one minute into the third period when freshman center Logan Nickolaus (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Wisconsin Windigo NAHL) netted his team-leading 15th goal of the season.

Sophomore center Ryan Jaros (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central / Battle Creek Kernels USPHL Premier) added his 10th goal of the season with 3 1/2 minutes remaining. Pratt chipped in two assists.

Wigfield made 34 saves.

Hope returns from the holidays on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. with a GL6 series opener at No. 6 Adrian College.
