Women's Track and Field Wins Two Indoor Events at GVSU Tune-Up

Hope will next compete during the MIAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 1, at Trine

The Hope College women's track and field team won two events and finished in the top three in four more at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up on Friday.

It was the final indoor meet before the MIAA Championships on Saturday, March 1, at Trine University. The Flying Dutch seek a third consecutive league title.

Junior Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett HS) took first in the triple jump, while junior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) sprinted to the fastest time in the 200 meters.

Johnson matched her season-best leap at 10.37 meters (34-0 ½). Sophomore Kiersten Schmitt (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) was runner-up at 10.08 meters (33-1).

Schermerhorn clocked a non-converted 200 sprint of 24.91 seconds. Senior Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids) finished fourth at 26.32.

In the 60 meters, Schermerhorn placed third with a sprint of 7.84 seconds. During prelims, Schermerhorn clocked 7.73 — just 0.04 off Nora Kuiper's 2009 Hope indoor record.

In the 400, Leahy finished runner-up after a time of 58.37. Junior Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire/Saint Johnsbury Academy) took fourth at 1:00.07.
