Women's Indoor Track/Field Wins Three Events, Records Three Season-Best Efforts at Windy City Rumble

The Hope College women's indoor track and field team won three events and posted three season-best performances en route to a runner-up finish on Saturday at the University of Chicago's Windy City Rumble.

The Flying Dutch took first in the 4x400 relay as well as individually in the 200 and 400 meters.

Hope also recorded season-best times in the 800 meters, the 5,000 meters and the pole vault.

In the 4x400 relay, junior Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), sophomore Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), junior Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire/Saint Johnsbury Academy) and junior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) clocked a winning time of 4 minutes, 10.13 seconds.

A second Hope relay placed third. Freshman Lily Sackrider (St. Johns, Michigan / St. Johns), junior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South), freshman Erin Stuk (Pinckney, Michigan / Father Gabriel Richard) and junior Emma DeJoy (Pittsford, New York / Our Lady of Mercy) went 4:31.19.

In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn posted a winning run of 25.46 seconds. Leahy and freshman Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) scored in the event in third (26.65) and sixth place (27.01), respectively. Schermerhorn finished fifth in the 60 meters (7.97).

In the 400 meters, Leahy recorded a first-place time of 59.66 seconds. Freshman Clare Sherman (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) was eighth at 1:04.98.

In the 800 meters, Markham raced to Hope's top time of the season with a second-place effort of 2:24.35. Four more Hope runners scored in the events: freshman Maddie VandeBunte (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) in third at 2:28.47, Durow in sixth at 2:29.75, and Sackrider and senior Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central) in a tie for seventh at 2:30.36.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Nidia Martinez (Fennville, Michigan / Fennville) posted Hope's top of the season at 19:50.57. 

Three more Flying Dutch runners scored in the event: junior Claire Vellinga (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) in third at 19:54.70, freshman Rylie Kraus (Granville, Ohio / Granville) in fifth at 20:27.54 and senior Isabella Brady (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) in sixth at 20:43.13.

In the pole vault, sophomore Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) cleared the Flying Dutch's highest height of the season with a sixth-place 3.06 meters (10 feet, 0-½ inches).

Hope earned points in six more events.

In the triple jump, junior Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) finished runner-up with a leap of 10.3 meters (33-9 ½). Sophomore Kiersten Schmitt (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) was sixth at 9.95 meters (32-7 ¾).

Johnson also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.08 meters (16-8).

In the 60 hurdles, freshman Lydia Rowe (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson) took fifth with a run of 10.17 seconds. Freshman Cassidy Hart (Frankenmuth, Michigan / Frankenmuth) was eighth at 12.55.

In the mile, VandeBunte clocked a sixth-place time of 5:21.0. Struck was eighth at 5:23.6.

In the high jump, senior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) cleared the bar with a sixth-place 1.53 meters (5-0 ¼).

In the shot put, junior Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) took sixth with a toss of 11.70 meters (38-4 ¾).

Hope next competes on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Meet.
